Oshun est l'Esprit du fleuve dans la tradition religieuse ouest-africaine appelée Ifá. Le mot Oshun est le nom donné pour décrire une convergence complexe de forces spirituelles qui sont des éléments clés du concept Ifá de la fertilité et de l'érotisme. Ces forces spirituelles qui constituent le fondement d'Oshun dans le royaume des esprits sont liées à la création de nouvelles formes à travers l'interaction entre des pôles opposés. Selon Ifá, la Création se produit à travers la polarité entre les Forces d'expansion et de contraction. Ensemble, ces Forces créent la lumière et les ténèbres, qui à leur tour soutiennent et définissent tout ce qui existe. Les écritures Ifá font souvent référence aux Forces d'expansion comme « Orisha Okunrin », qui signifie « Esprit masculin » et aux Forces de contraction comme « Orisha Obinrin », qui signifie « Esprit féminin ».
